Genome sequencing and assembly are the fundamentals of understanding the genomes of organisms. Currently, next-generation-sequencing (NGS) is dominating the field of DNA sequencing because of its high data throughput and lost cost. However, NGS poses new computational challenges in de novo genome assembly because the obtained sequences are shorter than traditional Sanger sequences. We will describe the nature of these challenges and the current methods that tackle these challenges.
