Abstract:

The Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) working group has developed a data dictionary (including a data model) for implementing preservation metadata as well as a set of XML schema for recording preservation metadata. The schema were developed with the understanding that they should be useful both for standalone documents and as means for encoding preservation metadata within digital library packaging standards such as the METS document format.  While the combination of PREMIS and METS provides a valuable framework for creating digital library objects amenable to long-term preservation, they are not in and of themselves sufficient to insure the longevity of digital library materials.  By drawing upon some of the concepts from the Open Archival Information System Reference Model, I will try to elucidate some of the additional requirements for long-term digital preservation of digital library materials and their implications for the use of PREMIS and METS for digital library encoding.
