We investigate a model for re-keying in secure group communications and derive an expression of the total cost that takes into account both the cost for re-keying and the cost of key (and hence information) leakage. From this relation we can determine an optimal re-key interval for various choices of parameters under our cost model. Some numerical examples show our predictions to be apparently meaningful. Our results have practical implications when designing a practical scheme for secure group communications.
