Abstract

X86 binary is backward compatible. Whatever the x86 code runs today is guaranteed to run on the future X86 architecture. Graphic programs achieve backward compatibility via bytecode that neutralizes target platform differences. The underneath graphic ISAs usually do not provide backward compatibility. For instance, Intel graphic ISA does not provide portability --- one generation binary is not portable to the next generation. As graphic processors and CPU are integrated on the same die, how to enable different compilers to compile different languages that effectively leverage the computational power of integrated graphic processors while achieving backward compatibility is becoming increasingly important. The talk presents how to virtualize ISA for Intel graphic processors to achieve this goal.
