Abstract

MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) is a working group of ISO/IEC with the mission to develop standards for coded representation of digital audio and video and related data. Since 1988, MPEG has produced several international standards that help the industry offer end users an ever more enjoyable digital media experience. Recently MPEG has also developed 3D video coding standards for stereoscopic and multi-view image formats. In this lecture, we will explain MPEG activities for 3D video coding. After a brief introduction to 3D video formats, we review the history of MPEG 3D video coding standards, such as MVC, FTV and 3DVC. Then, the current MPEG activities for 3D video coding will be discussed with their coding tools.
