摘要

Interpersonal communication is a basic task that people encounter and handle in various contexts and domains, ranging from collocated collaborative work to distributed social networking. Successful communication between individuals, however, can be difficult because of the constraints of the communicators (e.g., lack of language proficiency in cross-lingual teamwork), the communication media (e.g., the short of non-verbal cues in online communication), or both. In the Collaborative and Social Computing Lab at National Tsing Hua University, we're pursuing interdisciplinary human-computer interaction (HCI) research that integrates computing and behavioral sciences, with the goal of better supporting interpersonal communication and social interaction. In this talk, I'll first give an overview of the field of HCI, and then talk about how we approached the topics of interpersonal communication from the angle of HCI research.

BIO

Dr. Hao-Chuan Wang is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and the Institute of Information Systems and Applications of National Tsing Hua University since February 2012. He received his Ph.D. in Information Science from Cornell University in 2011. He also studied and worked at the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University (2006-2008) and the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica (2004-2006) previously. Prof. Wang’s main research interest lies in the collaborative and social aspects of human-computer interaction (HCI). His work aims to integrate computing research and behavioral and social sciences for problem solving and value creation. He is an active participant of international and regional HCI communities, such as ACM SIGCHI. He serves as one of the Program Committee Associate Chairs for CHI and CSCW for several years, and the Demonstrations Co-Chair for CSCW 2014. He’s also a Program Co-Chair for Chinese CHI 2014 and 2015.  Prof. Wang is also one of the recipients of Google Research Awards in 2014.
