Acoustic noise problems become more and more serious with increasing use of industrial and medical equipment, appliances, and consumer electronics. Active noise control (ANC) has been studied to solve such acoustic noise problems. ANC is a technique based on the principle of superposition, i.e., an antinoise with the same amplitude and opposite phase is generated and combined with an unwanted noise, thus resulting in the cancellation of both noises. However, ANC is still not widely used owing to the effectiveness of control algorithms, and to the physical and economical constraints of practical applications. In this paper, we briefly introduce some fundamental ANC structures, and focus on recent advances on signal processing algorithms, implementation techniques, challenges for innovative applications, and open issues for further research and development of ANC systems.

Prof. Kajikawa received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in electrical engineering from Kansai University, Osaka, Japan, and the D.E. degree in communication engineering from Osaka University in 1991, 1993, and 1997, respectively. He joined Fujitsu Ltd., Kawasaki, Japan, in 1993 and engaged in research on active noise control. In 1994, he joined Kansai University, where he is now a professor. His current research interests lie in the area of signal processing for audio and acoustic systems. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP), Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ). He is currently serving as an associate editor for the Journal of the ASJ, the chair of IEEE Signal Processing Society Kansai Chapter, and an executive committee member of IEEE Kansai Section. He is now a vice president of Engineering Science Society in IEICE. He is also a BoG member in APSIPA and a member of SLATC in APSIPA. He is the author or co-author of more than 180 articles in journals and conference proceedings and has been responsible for 5 patents. He received the

1997 Academic Encouragement Award from the IEICE, the 2002 Awaya Kiyoshi Academic Encouragement Award from the ASJ, the 2012 Sato Prize Paper Award from the ASJ, and the Best Paper Award in APCCAS 2014.
