Research Description

My research interests are in the theoretical foundation of computer science and in applying fundamental tools to various areas. I am most
interested in understanding the structure of objects to be manipulated computationally, classifying the resources needed for various
computational problems, and identifying more e cient algorithms. In the application eld, I am interested in information privacy, simulation
and medical informatics. I was previously involved in the design of information privacy protection mechanisms and the development of
privacy regulations in medical research. We developed a prototype system, CellSecu, to safeguard personal privacy. The system checks if
datasets that are intended to be released contain too much personal information. The system is based on an appropriate logic model, which
we discovered. We also proposed a method to quantify privacy leakage with information theory and economic models I have worked closely
with Centers for Disease Control in Taiwan to use computer simulations to facilitate decision making processes. We developed an e cient
agent-based stochastic simulator to study the spatial transmission patterns of in uenza. We also studied problems related to vaccination
strategy, such as searching for appropriate strategies with di erent objectives and di erent social structures in the population. We applied a
surrogate assisted genetic algorithm to make the search process more e cient, and we also apply machine learning methods to construct
better surrogate functions. Recently, I have been involved with data bank related operations to provide guidance on privacy protection and
information security.
