Species are embedded in a web of intricate trophic interactions, namely a food web. Since a food web is a type of network, species can be characterized by their network positions in the food web. Those characterizations offer us the tools for quantifying the importance and uniqueness of individual species from a network perspective. In this talk, I present some measures for species importance and uniqueness, and testing the relationship between these two types of properties. Finally, the notion of species uniqueness is extended to measure biodiversity in a ecosystem.

Wei-chung Liu is currently an associate research fellow from Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica. He is an Ecologist by training, and has some interests in the theoretical aspects of ecological networks, these include: food web models, network analysis of food webs, and statistical inference of food web parameters and properties.
