Abstract
Hearing assistive devices (HADs) include hearing aids, cochlear implants, and various other devices designed to provide access to sound for individuals with hearing loss. HADs employ customized sound amplification, mechanical vibration, or electrical stimulation to convey sound information to the partially damaged auditory system. This talk reviews the fundamentals of hearing, hearing loss, and HADs, including their historical development and innovations in signal processing. Furthermore, the talk highlights various deep learning approaches for HADs in the current era of artificial intelligence (AI). Approaches for objective and subjective evaluation in assessing HAD signal processing are also briefly introduced. The innovation of signal processing approaches in HADs is an ongoing journey with great potential to help millions of individuals.
