Congratulations to Academician Dr. Der-Tsai Lee who received Humboldt Research Award

Academician Der-Tsai Lee, Distinguished Research Fellow and Director, Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, has been selected by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to receive a Humboldt Research Award. This award, given to eminent foreign scholars in recognition of their lifetime academic achievements, is one of the most prestigious scientific honors in Germany. Dr. Lee will go to Germany in April 2008 to receive this award.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers several fellowships to encourage foreign researchers to visit Germany for short-term research exchange. The Humboldt Research Award is the highest honor given to internationally renowned scientists and scholars from abroad. Each awardee receives €60,000 EUR and is invited to carry out research projects of his or her choice in cooperation with colleagues in Germany.

Dr. Lee was nominated by Prof. Dr. Johannes Buchmann, Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at the Technische Universitat Darmstadt, Germany. Dr.Lee is one of the pioneers in computational geometry, and has conducted research in the following areas, including design and analysis of algorithms, computational geometry, VLSI layout and manufacturing, bioinformatics, software security, digital libraries and web-based problem-solving environment. He is author of over 150 papers in scientific journals, holds several US and Taiwan patents and is Editor of several journals.

Academician Lee also holds a joint appointment with the Dept. of Computer Science and Information Engineering, and the Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering, National Taiwan University. He is currently involved with many large-scale projects, sponsored by the National Science Council, Taiwan, including the “Content Science for Media-Rich Life”- program for promoting academic excellence of universities, “Taiwan Information Security Center”- program for cultivating talents and building human capacity in information security, and “National Digital Archives Program, Taiwan”- a Science and Technology Program in Social Sciences and Humanities, etc.

Academician Lee is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He was a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award from the Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation (2001) and of the Information Science Honorary Medal from the Institute of Information and Computing Machinery in Taiwan (2002) and elected a member of the Academia Sinica in 2004.
