We have witnessed the explosive growth of multimedia contents in recent years. However, many individuals with disabilities have difficulties in accessing, understanding and consuming different kinds of multimedia contents. For example, for the people with color vision deficiency, many colorful images and videos cannot be well perceived, and for the guys with hearing impairment, the audio information in video data cannot be perceived. In this talk, we introduce some research efforts towards bridging multimedia and the people with certain disabilities via specific technologies. We will introduce image search and enhancement for colorblindness, accessibility indicator for multimedia creators, and video accessibility enhancement for deaf users via intelligent captioning. They will demonstrate how the special groups can be accommodated with the existing multimedia processing techniques.

Bio:
Dr. Meng Wang is a research scientist in the NUS-Tsinghua Extreme Search Center in the National University of Singapore. He received the B.E. degree and Ph.D. degree in the Special Class for the Gifted Young and signal and information processing from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Hefei, China, respectively. He previously worked as an associate researcher at Microsoft Research Asia, and then a research scientist in a startup in Bay area. His current research interests include multimedia content analysis, search, mining, recommendation, and large-scale computing. He has authored 6 book chapters and over 70 journal and conference papers in these areas, and hosts 11 filed or pending U.S. patents. He received the best paper awards in the 17th and 18th ACM International Conference on Multimedia and the best paper award in the 16th International Multimedia Modeling Conference.
