摘要

Recently, driven by technological advances, globalization, and lowering of trade barriers, there has been significant economic growth and major developments around the globe. The ongoing growth and development, however, has disastrous impact on our environment and causes global warming which presents serious risks to us. So, there is mounting pressure  on us -- businesses, governments, professionals and the society - to go green. IT, which  has fundamentally altered our productivity, economy, and social well-being, can help us in this endeavour and play a new role -- helping to create a greener, more sustainable environment while offering economic benefits. While IT can offer solutions to environmental problems facing us, it is a contributor to the problem as well.  We can, however, make IT systems and their use greener and, more importantly,  apply IT innovatively in several domains to minimize their impact on the environment.  Thus, by leveraging IT, we  can help create a sustainable environment that benefits our and future generations.

In this talk, beginning with a brief a discussion on environmental impacts of IT, I'll outline the scope, principles and practices of Green IT. I'll also discuss ongoing developments and research potential in this area, and illustrate how individuals and enterprises can embrace Green IT.
